Lighting a mountain home: creating atmosphere with layered light

Lighting can transform a mountain home faster than almost anything else. The answer is not more power, but better distribution.

Begin with activities

Identify where people read, cook, talk and rest. Each zone needs its own source, directed and controlled differently.

Build three levels

Soft general light supports movement; table and floor lamps illuminate tasks; small accent lights reveal a wall or material.

Choose a warm temperature

Warm light makes timber and natural textiles feel richer. Avoid mixing cold and warm tones in one room.

Light the corners

A lamp in a dark corner visually widens the room. Even a small lamp on a shelf can add depth.

Reduce glare

Choose fabric shades, opal glass and shielded bulbs. The light source should not dominate the view when you are seated.

Create an evening setting

When the main light is off, two or three low lamps should be enough. That intimate scene creates a sense of refuge without extra decoration.
