Chalet textiles: the right materials, colours and quantities

Textiles make a mountain home softer, quieter and more welcoming. The risk is using too many; the best result comes from a few coordinated layers.

Start with function

A rug defines a seating area, a curtain filters light and a throw adds warmth. Each textile should first solve a practical need.

Choose three textures

Combine one compact, one soft and one smooth texture: perhaps a wool rug, a bouclé throw and linen or cotton cushions.

Limit patterns

If tartan or an alpine pattern is the feature, keep the remaining textiles plain and repeat one of its colours.

Use natural shades

Cream, sand, taupe and stone grey make a calm base. Forest green, rust or deep red work as seasonal accents.

Check proportion

A rug that is too small fragments the living area; identical cushions make a sofa rigid. Mix two sizes and leave room to sit.

Change without starting again

A neutral base can be refreshed with one throw and two cushion covers. The chalet evolves with the seasons while keeping its identity.
